Much research has been done on the use of ACTs and SATs in college admissions. There have been studies on racial and socioeconomic biases that exist in the testing process as well as studies on the limited scope by which the tests measure students. Much of the research points toward the fact that the tests are not accurate, fair or the best way by which to assess students, however there are two sides to the argument and you can read more about them right here.
