About the authorEmma Rosenberg is a first year college student and business major at the University of Maryland, College park. Emma began researching the role the ACT and SAT play in the college admissions process when she was given the assignment to pick a topic to focus on for the entire semester for her English 101 class. As someone who had recently gone through the college admissions process and testing procedures, she knew immediately that she wanted to explore and shed light on this controversial topic. Since she began studying the topic, Emma has done extensive research on, and written numerous essays about the validity and fairness of these tests.
About the classEnglish 101 is the first mandatory English composition course students take upon starting college. It focuses on writing in ways to help you communicate more fluently, express your ideas more convincingly, and think more critically. Throughout this course, the students pick one topic that they do not necessarily feel strongly about to focus on for the whole semester. The students are not supposed to have strong opinions on the subject because they spend the semester researching it, and using the newfound information to formulate their thoughts on their topic of choice. Throughout the class, the students write a variety of different types of essays, and perform different types of research in order to learn and understand about all sides of the argument. Why I chose to write about my topicThe University of Maryland has always been my dream school and I knew that I had to do well on my ACT to increase my odds of acceptance. In order to ensure that I would do the best that I could on the test, I spent nearly all of my junior year studying, taking practice exams, and spending an inordinate amount of money on private tutors. In the end, I not only reached my goal, but I surpassed it. While I know that the time and effort that I put into studying for the ACT played a huge part in raising my score, I do not think that I would have done as well as I did without my tutors. I am incredibly grateful that my parents were able to pay for tutors and the other resources that helped me to accomplish my goal, however, my experience with the test made me realize the role that money and other resources played in the process. I knew it was unfair, and it made me curious about the ethicality of the exam, so when I needed to find a topic, I knew exactly what I wanted to focus on.
