Applying to college is an important and stressful time. What school you end up attending can have a huge impact on not only your college experience, but on your entire future. Because of this, there is a lot riding on college applications and the criteria colleges use to assess their applicants. By the time a student applies to college, it is fair to say that he or she has had at least 17 years of learning, hobbies, passions, personal experiences and life lessons. While it would be ideal for college admissions officers to look at all of these facets of each of their applicants, the fact is that they cannot and do not.
Instead, students are often looked at as a number. That number is a test score on their ACT or SAT.
